Understanding cannabis starts with understanding the words. From product types to plant science, this glossary will help you speak the language with confidence. Whether you’re shopping at a dispensary or exploring on your own, knowing these key terms will elevate your cannabis experience.

Budtender (noun) - A cannabis retail professional who helps customers choose products, explains effects, and recommends dosing at dispensaries.


Cannabinoids (noun) - A naturally occurring compounds in cannabis that interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system. The most common are THC and CBD.


CBD (Cannabidiol) (noun) - A non-psychoactive cannabinoid known for calming and anti-inflammatory effects. Often used for anxiety, inflammation, and wellness.


Dab (noun) - A small amount of cannabis concentrate vaporized for a potent effect. Usually consumed with a dab rig or vaporizer.


Dispensary (noun) - A legal cannabis retail store for medical or adult-use customers. Dispensaries sell lab-tested products and are often staffed by budtenders.


Edible (noun) - A food or beverage infused with cannabis. Edibles take longer to kick in but can offer stronger and longer-lasting effects.


Hybrid (noun) - A cannabis strain that combines both indica and sativa genetics. Effects vary based on dominant traits.


Indica (noun) - A type of cannabis strain often associated with relaxing, sedating effects. Commonly used in the evening or for pain and stress relief.


Lab-Tested (adjective) - Describes cannabis products that have been tested for cannabinoid content, contaminants, and safety. Always look for lab-tested products.


Microdose (verb/noun) - To consume a very small dose of cannabis (typically 1–3mg of THC) for subtle, functional effects without a strong high.


Potency (noun) - Refers to the strength or concentration of cannabinoids in a product, usually shown as a percentage of THC or CBD.


Pre-roll (noun) - A ready-made cannabis joint, typically sold in dispensaries. Some pre-rolls are infused with concentrates or rolled in kief.


Sativa (noun) - A cannabis type associated with uplifting, cerebral, and energizing effects. Often chosen for daytime use.


Strain (noun) - A specific cannabis variety with unique genetics, aroma, effects, and cannabinoid/terpene profiles. Examples: Gelato, Blue Dream, OG Kush.


Terpenes (noun) - Aromatic compounds found in cannabis that affect smell, flavor, and effects. Terpenes like limonene, myrcene, and pinene are key to how a strain feels.


THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) (noun) - The primary psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. THC is responsible for the “high” and commonly used for pain, sleep, and appetite.


Tincture (noun) - A liquid cannabis extract placed under the tongue for fast absorption. Often used for precise dosing or discreet use.


Topical (noun/adjective) - A cannabis product (like a lotion, balm, or patch) applied directly to the skin for localized relief. Non-psychoactive and used for pain or inflammation.
